It is quite possible to live the life of your dreams. Sometimes it may seem impossible, but it is. Your attitude is everything you need to change.
Is attitude everything?
Perhaps you’re feeling lost in life or maybe you’re dealing with some injustices. When your life takes an unexpected turn, dealing with the consequences and challenges can be difficult. Maybe you tried a variety of approaches to get yourself back on track, but nothing seems to work.
Is that something you resonate with?
If that’s the case, you’ve probably realized that living the ideal life isn’t always easy. However, enjoying a fulfilling life has very little to do with how your cards are dealt with but rather how you play them.
As the saying goes:
“Life is 1% what happens to you and 99% how you deal with it.”
This means that how you deal with life’s situations ultimately determines the quality of your life.
In any situation, the attitude you project will inevitably influence the outcome.
But you’re probably thinking to yourself, “How else am I expected to react to an unpleasant situation other than by feeling negative about it?”
Let’s look at an example of how a shift in attitude might help your situation:
The Traffic Scenario Example
Let’s assume you’re driving and you’re approaching an amber light that you’d prefer not to stop at since you’re running late. So you accelerate up and instead race through the red light, resulting in a police officer giving you a ticket.
You’re irritated and frustrated because you’re late for work. You’re boiling with rage, and you begin to shove the police officer. As a result, you’ve been issued a second ticket for assaulting a police officer.
So now, you got two tickets instead of one because of your negative attitude, and you’re still late for work!
Let’s look at how a change in attitude could have impacted the outcome for the better:
- By leaving home earlier, you could have saved time and did not have to rush through the light in the first place.
- Stopping at the yellow light would have resulted in a two-minute wait, rather than the 20-minute delay you encountered with the police!
- Accepting your mistake and telling the police officer about it could have resulted in leniency for the first offense. Maybe you could have even gotten away without getting a ticket at all.
- You would have avoided the ticket for the second offense if you had managed to keep your rage in check.
- You’ve lost at least $200 that you intended to use to finish your credit card payments. A more optimistic attitude would have saved you money and allowed you to stick to your credit card payment schedule.
That example demonstrates how a shift in attitude may radically change the result of a situation you’ve been pushed into – or one you’ve created entirely on your own!
It’s natural to want to respond to a situation’s tone in an equal manner. However, if that tone is negative, you will almost always be worse off.
The being fired Scenario Example
Another example is if you were fired from your job. Your natural reaction would be to be angry and frustrated. But what if, instead of adopting a negative attitude, you adopt a positive attitude?
What if you use it as an opportunity to finally change your career? You weren’t really happy, perhaps you were experiencing burnout and needed a change anyway. So, what if, instead of feeling sorry for yourself, you used this as an opportunity to get out of your comfort zone, learn new skills and become happier in the long run? Or maybe you’ve always wished for some free time to figure out what to do next. So, what if, instead of being angry with the world, you see this as a divine blessing?
How you choose to respond to your life’s struggles will determine the quality of your life. Your life is what you make it!
The most important takeaway from this article is that regardless of what is going on around you, how you respond to a situation is ALWAYS your decision (your attitude).
The moment you begin to modify your attitude you will start seeing your life shifting for the better.
If your ultimate objective in life is to be truly happy, you first need to understand how much influence you have over your life and most outcomes.
Once you’ve paused long enough to recognize that only YOU can choose how happy you feel, you’ll naturally begin shifting your perspective and attitude. And that will help you attain the happiness you seek!
I will leave you with this. Your life is only ever as good as your attitude is.
