WHO definition of mental health and wellbeing
Let’s first start by understanding exactly what we mean by having positive mental health and wellbeing.
As defined by the WHO, Mental Health is “a state of wellbeing in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”
Hence, Mental Health, i.e., having positive Mental Wellbeing, represents our mental state regarding our thoughts, emotions, and actions. And how well we can deal with the overall stress and the day-to-day struggles.
Everyone has mental health as everyone has physical health.
Mental wellbeing is crucial at all life stages, including childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
Individuals with good mental wellbeing know how to control their emotions, behavior, and thoughts.
This allows them to build stronger relationships both with themselves and others and deal better with day-to-day obstacles. Consequently, they are happier, have a positive healthy mindset, have more self-love, and enjoy life more.
Mental wellbeing is crucial at all stages of life, which include childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
The Importance Of Mental health and wellbeing
Before diving deeper, it is essential to distinguish between Mental Health and Mental Illness. It is vital to remember that the two are not the same.
More often than not, we consider our mental state as a scale, with good mental health on one end and mental illness on the other, and we are either one side or the other. However, this is not the case.
It’s essential to think of mental health and mental illness as separate entities.
You may have good mental health while still having a diagnosed mental illness that is being treated successfully. Likewise, it’s also possible to have poor mental health without having a mental illness.
That being said, living for an extended period of time in a poor mental wellbeing state could lead to the development of a diagnosed mental health illness, such as eating and anxiety disorders and depression.
Disclaimer: This blog focuses solely on mental health and wellbeing, not mental illness.
So what do you feel if you have poor mental wellness?
- feeling you are not enough and unworthy
- losing connection with yourself and others
- feeling lost
- experiencing a lack of sleep
- experiencing severe mood swings
- having a lack of self-love
- having low or no energy
- feeling unusually confused, forgetful, on edge, angry, upset, worried, or scared
- overthinking everything
- sensing a void inside or numb or like nothing matters.
On the contrary, when you have positive mental wellbeing, you feel satisfied and happy, but not only that. It may also include:
- feeling confident and having positive self-esteem
- developing and sustaining solid relationships
- realizing your full potential
- coping with stress and struggles of everyday life
- being capable of adjusting to different situations, especially in times of uncertainty
- having a sense of belonging.
Keeping in mind that having good mental health and wellbeing does not mean you won’t experience negative thoughts and feelings.
Everyone encounters challenging situations in life where it creates anger, frustration, sadness, etc. Unfortunately, no switch could turn off these feelings and emotions.
However, having good mental health and wellbeing means that you’ll be capable of confronting challenging situations in the best possible way, surrendering yourself from anything you cannot control, and learning how to move forward from them.
Sustaining mental wellbeing necessitates time and effort.
The more you invest in it, the easier it will become.
Working Towards Mental Health And Wellbeing
The state of our mental wellbeing impacts all aspects of our life, and by taking care of it, it improves how we feel daily. Our mental health and wellbeing is a spectrum and is constantly changing according to how well we confront and adapt to the obstacles we face daily.
Sustaining mental wellbeing necessitates time and effort; the more you invest in it, the easier it will become.
There are various ways you can try to better your mental wellbeing, and different techniques work differently with people, but here are some basics you could try:
1. Movement
Nowadays, everyone knows the importance of doing physical activity daily. However, some may not be aware that outdoor physical activity, especially in nature or near the sea, has extra benefits.
Studies show that just being outside will make you feel happier, improve your self-esteem, increase your concentration and heal faster. The reason is that by being in nature, we are exposed to negative irons, which are best known for stabilizing our moods and increasing our serotonin. Exercising around the ocean may be optimal, but any natural environment is of benefit.
And by exercising, I’m not saying you need to follow a challenging program and exercise until you feel you’re going to die.
If you’re not a gym person or don’t like to work out, you can include physical activity in your daily activities. For example, instead of eating at your desk, you can go for a walk at lunchtime or walk to an appointment instead of driving.
Another easy way to incorporate movement into your day is by dancing to your favorite music. You can dance while cooking or folding your clothes.
Be creative! Find what works for you and your lifestyle, and do that! The important thing is that you are moving your body and enjoying yourself.
2. Practicing Mindfulness
What is Mindfulness?
According to Oxford Languages, the term mindfulness refers to “a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.”
Practicing mindfulness gives you better control of your feelings and emotions. Thus, when faced with challenging situations, instead of feeling overwhelmed and lost, you overcome them more calmly.
In today’s world, overthinking is truly a condition almost every person is experiencing because, inevitably, we are exposed to a lot of data all the time. That is why it is crucial that we give our minds some time and space to relax and calm down and just be in the present moment.
One way to practice mindfulness is through meditation. During meditation, you focus solely on the present moment and clear your mind from the cluttered thoughts that may be troubling you and causing stress. That is why practicing daily meditation is extremely beneficial. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy; be in a quiet place, unwind, breathe deeply, and stay still.
Another way to practice mindfulness is through journaling. If you’re having a hard time, you might want to think about keeping a journal. That’s right, writing in a journal can help you feel better after traumatic and stressful events, according to a Cambridge University study.
Journaling, in addition to providing a place to reflect on accomplishments, can assist people in self-growth and becoming more productive. Try it out and see how it makes you feel!
You can also use our Daily Inspo page as an inspiration. You can make a list of things that you are grateful for and repeat your daily positive affirmations. It will help you control your mind, even if for just a few minutes.
3. Nourish your body
Many people are aware of the advantages that a well-balanced diet has on our physical health, but how many are aware of its benefits to our mental wellness and health?
We are what we eat.
During the last decade or so, many studies have shown that food has a growing effect on our overall mental wellness and severe mental disorders like depression and anxiety.
As highlighted by Healthline, like all other organs, the mind reacts to what you eat and drink. The brain needs key vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to function properly and remain sharp. If you don’t give your brain these nutrients, it won’t function properly, and it may increase your risk of mental health issues like depression, anxiety, lack of sleep, etc.
We are what we eat! So it is essential to be aware and understand what you’re putting into your body regularly. Because, eventually, anything you put into your body will affect your overall well-being.
